# Furniture Quality Control: A Buyer’s Pre-Shipment Checklist

A practical overview of the checks sourcing teams can use to review materials, construction, finish, packaging and production consistency before shipment.

Furniture quality is not created by one final inspection. It is built through a sequence of material approvals, in-process checks and documented standards. A pre-shipment inspection is still essential, but it works best when earlier quality checkpoints are already in place.

## Confirm the approved reference

The inspection team should have access to the signed sample, drawings, bill of materials, color references and packaging specification. Without an approved standard, subjective decisions can delay shipment and create inconsistent results.

## Review dimensions and construction

Check overall dimensions, seat height, clearances and key structural points against the approved drawing. For upholstered furniture, review frame joints, spring or webbing installation, foam density records and leg attachment. For casegoods, inspect panel alignment, hardware installation and door or drawer movement.

## Inspect visible surfaces

- Confirm fabric or leather color, direction and batch consistency

- Check stitching, seam alignment, piping and tufting

- Review wood, veneer, stone and metal finishes under consistent lighting

- Look for scratches, glue marks, dents, color variation and uneven gaps

## Test function and stability

Open and close moving parts repeatedly. Sit, lean and apply reasonable force to identify noise or movement. Adjustable mechanisms, electrical components and hardware should be tested according to the agreed inspection plan.

## Verify labels and packaging

Confirm product labels, carton marks, barcodes, manuals and hardware packs. Packaging should protect the product through the expected distribution route, not only during factory handling. Pay particular attention to corners, protruding legs, glass, stone and high-gloss surfaces.

## Record findings clearly

A useful inspection report includes quantities checked, defect classifications, photographs, measurements and a clear pass, fail or pending decision. When corrective work is required, define the reinspection scope before authorizing shipment.

> The best quality-control process makes expectations visible before production begins.
